Powerman 5000 x Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare

Powerman 5000 is a band that is no stranger to the ebbs and flows of the high seas of Rock and Roll, but they pilot their ironclad galleon of powerful lyrics and killer riffs with ease and proficiency. Riding like a bat out of hell on the heels of their brand new record, Builders of the Future, Powerman 5000 is still doing exactly what they’ve already mastered, which is taking great heavy rock and mixing it with heavy doses of pop culture and science fiction. I had the incredible pleasure of chatting with Powerman’s frontman, Spider, about all this. In the same interview, we also covered the band’s involvement in Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare, and much more.

Song Shots: “It’s Raining Dicks” by Afterbirth Monkey (feat. Schaffer the Darklord)

This Song Shot is a little different from previous ones for one major reason: Matt’s in it! The video, that is. The hilarious Afterbirth Monkey has put together a music video for their “After-Bro” anthem called, “It’s Raining Dicks.” The song can be found on their full-length release, Man Dies Defecating a Drinking Game, available on iTunes.

(Hed) P.E. Is Evolving With Their New Record “Evolution”

(hed)p.e. is a group that I latched onto very tightly in my high school years. They were one of the earliest “heavy” bands I listened to (not counting classics like Megadeth and Metallica). Needless to say, without dating myself any further, they’ve been around a long time. On July 22, their brand new record, Evolution, is coming out on Pavement Records. This is the (hed)p.e.’s tenth full-length studio album.

KISS is a band that needs no introduction. Their new record “KISS 40: Decades of Decibels” is a 40-year retrospective of this epic and talented band. It’s chock full of goodies including studio favorites, live tracks, and both previously released and unreleased demos. The mix of live, studio, and demos gives the album a variety unlike that of other anthologies.

Road Review: Best Rap Show Ever – Featuring Tribe One, Louis Logic, Mikal kHill, Adam WarRock and Schaffer The Darklord

Sunday night, February 9th 2014, I had the wondrous experience of attending the best rap show ever featuring the likes of Tribe One, Louis Logic, Mikal kHill, Adam WarRock, and last but not least, Schaffer The Darklord. (I have a photo to prove that the title rings true, courtesy of former guest, Nelson Lugo.) The Fifth Estate on Fifth Ave. in Brooklyn was the venue that housed this awesome band of wordsmiths for this momentous night, and indeed these incredibly nerdy and brilliant rappers hit me with a barrage of hip hop punches from the moment the first act hit the stage.

Matt, Music, and the Movies: An Introduction

So you like movies, huh? Well imagine for a second what those movies would be like without music of any kind? Pretty drab and forgettable, I bet. Music, when used right, has a way of bringing a scene to life. It can make it shine and stand out in a big way. From musicals to dramas, comedies to action, documentaries to horror, all of these genres benefit from a memorable soundtrack. Try and imagine Star Wars without John Williams’s score. I bet that movie would not have felt anywhere near as epic or powerful without it. Music plays such an important role in film, there has even been the rare occasion that I’ve bought a soundtrack without having seen the film.
