Record Review: Mike Phirman – The Very Last Songs I Will Ever Record (Part 1)

Mike Phirman is a talented and kind artist releasing music in the style of comedy. Essentially he writes music with a humorous twist. He very recently released his first solo record titled The Very Last Songs I Will Ever Record (Part 1). Mike Phirman is also known for his work with the music comedy duo Hard ‘N’ Phrim with G4 personality and genuine funny guy Chris Hardwick. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike early earlier this month.

I had the pleasure of doing some Q + A with the wonderful and funny Paul and Storm. I first heard of these guys when i went to PAX East earlier this year. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Phirman, a comedy musician. He recently released his record The Very Last Songs I Will Ever Record (Volume One) and I will have a review of this awesome record soon to come. Mike was also a part of the comedy duo Hard ‘n’ Phirm with G4 personality and funny man Chris Hardwick. I had the honor of talking to Mike on Skype and here is a transcript of our interview. Enjoy!

Song Shots: Walking The Dog by fun.

I came across the song, “Walking the Dog” by fun. in a pretty atypical way for myself. Spin Magazine made a compilation for the New Jersey outdoor music festival The Bamboozle. I, being the music whore I am known to be, downloaded this free mix, burned it to a CD and popped it in my car’s radio. I found myself repeating the same song over and over again, something that hardly ever happens. I must admit, any song that has a “nah, nah, nah” chorus makes me weak at the knees. This song has something that a lot of songs don’t have nowadays, coincidentally, fun.

Song Shots: The Lonely Island – Boombox (ft. Julian Casablancas)

Boombox is the latest single for from comedy group The Lonely Island featuring Julian Casablancas of The Strokes. This song is silly, fun and very catchy. The heavy bass mixed with hilarious lyrics is a 1,2 punch of bliss.

Record Review: Train – Save Me, San Francisco

Train is an Alternative/Pop rock band from San Francisco, California that formed back in 1994. The band first found massive success in 2001 with the song “Drops Of Jupiter” from the album of the same name.

Song Shots: Train – Hey, Soul Sister

This song is easy to relate to if you’re lucky enough to have found your soul mate. The above lyric stands out the most to me and is my favorite from the song. You can feel this song with every beat. The acoustic guitar makes for a beautiful background while the drums lead the way.

Dissertation: Politics

We Americans were unlucky in the 90’s. Sure, plenty of good music came out of that decade, but it wasn’t really substantial. The radio co-opted main-stream radio. And while I listen to anything, on occasion, they have changed from their roots. Pop sold sex, Rap propagated anger, and Rock said…nothing. The ‘Protest Song’ was lost, and this was a tragedy for Americans.

Road Review: Pick Up the Phone Tour

On Sunday, April 10th 2010, I had a chance to go see the Pick Up The Phone Tour Featuring Hurricane Bells, Stars of Track and Field, and Blue October. This tour is a collaboration of these bands as well as To Write Love on Her Arms, PostSecret and 1-800-Suicide National Hopeline Network to raise suicide awareness. It is a brilliant way to raise suicide awareness and bring to light a problem that too often goes unnoticed. This tour was designed to help people suffering from mental health issues and show them that they have somewhere to turn for help.

Error 404: Music Not Found

Hey all I know I kind of fell off the map for a bit. I was in the middle of moving and had no internet until now. I’m seeing Blue October this Saturday so you can expect a post about the show that night or the following morning!
